How Does a Torque Multiplier Work?

How Does a Torque Multiplier Work?

    Torque

  1. Torque is rotational force, put into motion when the wheel on a car begins to turn, or when a mechanic pulls on a wrench. However, it always takes more input force (such as the horsepower from the engine to make the wheel turn) to create less torque; this is unless some form of torque multiplier is used.

    Torque Multiplication

  2. The purpose of a torque multiplier is to increase the torque created in a given situation. Here's a simple example: a person is trying to unscrew a nut with their fingers. Ignoring the fact that it may be difficult for him to get a grip, he'll have to put a huge amount of muscle power into the task to turn the nut because he can't get the proper torque. By using a wrench, which has a long bar that acts as a lever, a person can increase the torque he's creating to make the task easier. The longer the bar, or lever, the greater the amount of torque is created.

    Gears

  3. Most torque multipliers don't use long bars and levers, though these methods will still work and it's why there are wrenches with three foot handles. A more compact type of torque multiplier can be made using gears. One system, called the planetary gear system, is popular for increasing the torque in hand tools. This system involves a short bar that's attached to a gear. The primary gear, called the sun gear, is connected to numerous other gears. As the sun gear turns, the other gears turn around it and multiply the force that was originally put into the planetary gear system to increase the torque to levels that would have been otherwise nearly impossible to achieve by hand.
